College World Series Preview And 2024 Baseball Odds, Pairings And Stats (2024)

The eight CWS finalists have made it to Omaha for the 2024 College World Series. College baseball’s most prominent showcase features three of the eight teams returning to the CWS for the second straight year with top seed and tournament favorite Tennessee joined by fellow SEC rival Florida and Virginia from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The College World Series is dominated by the ACC and SEC with four teams each who made it through the 64 teams in Regionals. Betting was more popular again this year, and continued with strong ratings through the best-of-3 series of 16 teams in the Super Regionals. Seven of the eight teams in the field are among the top 16 national seeds, with the exception being Florida.

Since 2006, the ACC and SEC have combined for 57% of the teams advancing to the College World Series.

  • NR. Florida Gators (34-28) - Kevin O’Sullivan

Tennessee is swinging big bats in hopes of becoming the first No. 1 overall seed since Miami in 1999 to win the national title. The Volunteers have five regulars in the lineup with an OPS of at least 1.000, and Tennessee led the nation with 173 home runs, second-most by a single team in NCAA history. Add in the best team ERA (3.83) of the 8 in the CWS, and the Volunteers are the favorites to capture the 2024 College World Series in their third trip in four years.

Kentucky has four-plus hitters above .300 and a fundamentally-coached team by Nick Mingione, who had never been a head coach at any level in his career before getting the UK job in 2017. Kentucky has since made three Super Regionals and now to the first College World Series in program history.

Texas A&M is making their second CWS appearance in the last three seasons. The Aggie’s 3.94 team ERA is second-best in the CWS behind Tennessee, and top-5 in the country. Star switch-hitting RF and projected top-10 MLB pick Brandon Montgomery will miss the CWS after suffering an ankle injury during the Super Regionals. Texas A&M drew a nation-high 396 walks, and the Aggies have a team .977 OPS and are hitting .300 as a team with 132 home runs, the fourth-most among Division I teams.

North Carolina won three NCAA tournament games in their final at bat this year. An ACC-best team ERA of 4.22 is led by a dominant bullpen. The Tar Heels are seeking their first national title. The program has made the CWS eight times since 2006, and twice national title runner-up (2006, 2007).

Florida State went 8-1 on neutral fields this season. The Seminoles team batting average (.316) is top-1o in the country and only behind Virginia in the College World Series.

“The first opening weekend in Omaha is right up there with an experience at an NFL Super Bowl playoff-type game, the Final Four, Augusta. It’s that. And the players are going to feel it.” FSU coach Link Jarrett

NC State is back in the CWS after the 2021 Wolfpack were one win away from making the finals when the NCAA removed them from the CWS because of COVID-19 protocols. Six players remain from that group for a Wolfpack team hitting .290 during the regular season and a pitching poor 6.09 ERA.

Virginia won the CWS in 2015, and this year’s Cavaliers team is batting .336 to rank No. 2 in the country with eight batters in the lineup hitting at least .332. Virginia’s 116 home runs shattered the program record set last year. However, the Cavs pitching team ERA is 5.39.

Florida is making their 8th CWS appearance, but the Gators are the only unseeded team in the field. The 2017 national champions and last year’s national runner-up, this year’s Gators team finished just 13-17 in SEC play and batted just .272 as a team. The Gators team defense and .981 fielding percentage was best in the SEC.
