PLEASE HELP! Out in desert bike won't start! by Kyle450x » Fri Nov 09, 2012 9:38 pm
Alright well after installing the 08 diaphragm mod, new slide o ring, and a 50 leak jet, my bike won't start...
I tried putting the 70 leak jet back in to no avail...
I also installed the merge racing spring. What's happening: bike turns over, and when I open the throttle the jet squirts the fuel directly towards the engine.
It keeps turning over and no fire regardless of choke etc. shooting big flames occasionally through the exhaust. Tried the cleaner filter...Seems to be getting spark (flames), fuel, and air....
Please help!

Did you make sure you installed the floating valve seal and plate in the correct orientation?

The seal and the plate must be installed in the correct orientation.
Verify this and report back.

I installed the floating valve seal so that the hole was down. The new gasket has a ridge that was facing upwards in correlation to the floating valve once removed. The 'male' side of the floating valve sits inside the recessed side of the slider valve correct?
Checked for spark: all good...
She ran great 2 weekends ago and I decided to eliminate the bog...I did bring all my old hardware with me minus the old check valve assembly, can I use the 08 assembly in my float bowl?

The AP diaphragm sits with the pin facing away Dom the float bowl correct? Other than the spring and 2 o rings is there anything else I could be forgetting? Or have forgot

install the diaphragm in the float bowl with the pin facing up.
here's a link to installing the updated AP kit
http://crfsonly.com/howto/keihin-fcr-ca ... rf450r.php
check your hot start cable and nut. make sure it is installed correctly and functional. check for air boot leaks. make sure your fuel screw is install correctly with the o-ring/washer/spring combination. if you have removed your kill switch verify it is installed correctly. if in doubt unplug it at the harness for troubleshooting purposes. verify your ignition time and valve clearances are correct.
if you have correct timing, valve clearance, spark, AP squirt, and compression it should start. so, verify all of these and report back.

The hot start cable just threads in, it doesn't look like it fits any certain way particular?
Am I overlooking something when installing the carb? I'm plugging in the TPS and the hot start and fuel hose

Can I run the new 08 AP cover with my older diaphragm? Just trying to narrow down variables

yes, you can. but the only difference in new diaphragm is the shorter pin. and if you are getting a good AP squirt it's likely not the AP that is causing this issue. the backfire you mentioned is typically a symptom of being lean or a timing or compression issue. so, air boot, floating valve seat. needles not full set in slide, timing or valve clearance.

Pulled off the valve cover and my left intake is quite tight... Can't fit in a .003 (should be .006). Will this cause it not to start?? Timing Is spot on. Idk how it could be lean seeing as I havnt changed the jetting for the last 2 years?

what is the actual clearance? it's it's gone to zero or very near zero then it will relieve compression making it impossible to start. on the margin it would definitely exhibit the symptoms you are describing.

I couldn't fit any feeler gauge through my intake valve. So after a few guesses and tests I ended up on 1.20, pretty sure that's the max limit? Too end time!

the shim size does not matter...what matters is getting the clearance gap set correctly. if you can't get the correct clearance then you need a valve job and new valves.

Accelerator pump set up will not likely affect starting.
