The secret that makes these ribs so amazing is that this recipe starts in the oven and finishes on the grill. Their time in the ovenmakes them extremely tender and juicy. Since they are wrapped in foil as they bake, they steam as they bake giving the most incredible tender ribs I’ve ever tasted.

Here’s how I make them.

How to Cook Simple BBQ Ribs

Ingredients Needed for Ribs:

To make these ribs, you’ll need:

  • Pork spareribs – you’ll need 5 pounds of these ribs, uncut
  • Homemade BBQ Sauce

Instructions to Cook Ribs

This is one of the recipes given to me by my Grandmother and I’ve added my family favorite Homemade BBQ Sauce. Make sure you don’t skip any of the steps in cooking the ribs. You won’t regret it!

Preheat. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cook in Oven. Wrap ribs in foil and place in roasting pan. Bake 1 ½ hours.

Prepare Homemade BBQ Sauce. While ribs are in oven, whisk together all bbq sauce ingredients in a medium saucepan situated over medium heat. Allow to come to a bubble and then reduce the heat to low. Allow to simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes. If you make this sauce ahead of time, allow sauce to cool slightly and place in airtight container and then place in the refrigerator. It is good in the fridge for up to a week if you are making ahead or storing any leftover sauce for later.

Remove and Drain Ribs. Remove ribs from oven after cooking 1 ½ hours. Drain any fat from the ribs.

Grill and Baste Ribs. Place ribs on grill. Grill for 10 minutes. Baste with Homemade BBQ Sauce. Continue grilling another 10 minutes.

Cut and Serve. Cut the racks into individual ribs. Reheat the remaining bbq sauce, if it’s not still warm. Serve the ribs with additional sauce so guests can add more sauce if they wish. Enjoy!

Do you cook ribs meat side up or down? ›

I always smoke mine bone side down (so the meaty side is facing up), for two reasons. First, I want the smoke to penetrate the bone side too, so each and every bite of the ribs is equally smoky and delicious. Secondly, if you cook them bone side UP, the juices will pool in the concave center of the bones.

Is it better to bake or BBQ ribs? ›

While BBQ gives ribs a distinct flavor, baking has other benefits to it. Baking gives you more control over how fast and how much the ribs are cooked. Because ovens have controlled temperature you are less likely to overcook or under cook your ribs.

What is the secret to juicy ribs? ›

Be sure to wrap the foil tightly to lock in moisture, as the steam from the ribs helps tenderize the meat, imbuing it with its own porky flavors. This is pork on pork, and one of the best ways to ensure the juiciest results. Another is the simple glaze you then prepare on the stovetop.

What's the best tenderizer for ribs? ›

Even a simple concoction of Knorr Pork Cubes, salt, and pepper will do wonders for your meat's texture and flavor! Make sure to add some sugar, which will form a caramelized outer layer and seal in the rib's moisture.

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add in the ribs and turn the heat low. Allow the ribs to simmer for about 45-minutes until just tender but the meat is not falling off the bones.

What can you spray on ribs to make them tender? ›

Combine the apple cider vinegar and apple juice in a spritzing bottle (this is my favorite). Spritz the ribs every 30 minutes after the first hour. Spritz and smoke. Keep your temperatures at 275 degrees F and the spritz hitting the ribs every 30 minutes until those ribs are tender.

Is 321 or 221 better for ribs? ›

The 3-2-1 method is specifically designed for pork spareribs, and the timing works best for that cut of rib. If you prefer baby back ribs, then you need to use a 2-2-1 method for the ribs or they will get overcooked and dry out.

How long to smoke ribs at 225 without foil? ›

Place the ribs on the smoker grate unwrapped and let them smoke for about 3 hours at 225°F.

How long do you cook ribs at 250 degrees? ›

Should ribs be 225 or 250 in the oven? ›

I start cooking ribs in the oven at around 200 degrees if they're wrapped in foil, and unwrapped ribs at 225 degrees to compensate for the cooling effect of evaporation from the exposed meat surface. These temperatures bring the inner meat temperature up to around 170 degrees in 3 to 4 hours.
